Adds expertise in the securities and insurance industries
Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC, a full-service national law firm, is pleased to announce that Douglas M. Palais will join the law firm’s litigation practice as a Member, effective May 6, 2010. He will be based in the firm’s Richmond, Virginia office. Mr. Palais joins the firm from LeClairRyan, where he was a Shareholder.

Doug Palais focuses his practice on litigation, arbitration and counseling on behalf of brokers and agents in the securities and insurance industries. As well as appearing as lead counsel in broker/dealer cases and arbitrations throughout the southeastern United States, he has also defended hundreds of insurance agent/broker errors & omissions cases. Mr. Palais appears before federal and state securities and insurance regulators in connection with a wide variety of regulatory issues including broker compensation matters and regulatory enforcement actions. In addition to his defense of insurance agent/broker errors & omissions claims, Mr. Palais also handles the defense of other professional liability matters, particularly directors and officers liability claims, attorney malpractice claims and complex insurance coverage matters. He handles multi-district litigation matters and has extensive federal and state court jury trial and appellate experience. Mr. Palais has been counted among the Best Lawyers in America and Virginia Super Lawyers for his experience in Securities Law and Insurance Law. He is an Adjunct Professor of Insurance Law for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business. He also serves as the Chair of the Civil Justice Committee of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Palais earned his J.D. from the Northwestern University School of Law and his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Lafayette College.
